August 5th, 1859 -- A short drive of something like 8 miles, and we stood at last on the banks of the far-famed Humboldt or St. Mary's River, at this point it is a very pretty mountain stream, cold and pure, the grass is really splendid but the dust is awfully annoying, felloe-deep and rising in a perfect fog, hard on both man and beast, we took dinner about two miles down the river, and made 8 miles more in the afternoon, and then camped near the river with the oxen belly-deep in as good grass as ever grew.Powell
Travelled 20 miles. Good road, yet dusty. The Humboldt is only a medium sized creek. We crossed it once. We have to knight grass waist high and plenty of fire wood, nothing strange.
